Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is the most sublime attraction of Tanjore. Built by Rajaraja Chola during the rule of the Chola Kingdom in the 10th century, this temple reflects a fantastic example of Indian architecture. It is world's first temple built thoroughly in granite. Its architectural charm has earned it the title of Unesco World heritage Site.
The temple is surrounded by fortified walls which were added in the 16th century. The 216 ft tall temple tower is among the tallest of its kind in the world. There is a beautiful state of Nandi bull carved out of a single rock at the entrance of the temple. during the raja-maharaja era the temple served as the venue for the foremost royal ceremonies like anointing the emperor. The Palace
