Songkran Thailand

All countries illustrious different feast and festivities that we inherit from our ancestors. In Thailand, one of the most populous and illustrious festivities is Songkran Festival. This festivity originally brought on the Northern part of Thailand by the Burmese. It is also institution in the countries in the North for instance Burma, Vietnam, Lao State and more. Songkran comes from the Sanskrit word "Samkranti" (astrological passage) which means "a move or change".

Songkran Thailand is illustrious for 3 consecutive days and nights beginning from April 13 up to 15. It is one of the longest holidays in Thailand. It has similarity in one of the festivity in India known as Holi. You'll be dumbfounded on how Thai commemorate this once a year event. The preparation is easily overwhelming!

Songkran Samui

Before the actual start date of Songkran, Thai people especially the housewives were busy cleaning their house. All the rubbish in the house must strictly removed. They have this trust that it might bring them bad luck if they keep junk inside their house. Not only that, all Buddha images must be carefully washed with scented water so that good fortune will truly on their way ahead.

Compared with other festivities that are illustrious in Thailand, Songkran is said to be the best! It focuses not on the earthly enjoyment but rather on the spiritual happiness. In fact, during this time traditionalists and religious extremists give their time to visit the Buddhist Monasteries to do devotional prayer. They also offer alms to the monks and feed them during this event. Thai also build chedis or the sand pyramid that is festooned with colorful designs like flowers and flag lets.

Songkran Thailand will never be perfect without the Water Battle. For some tourists it is merely throwing water, but to those who understand the meaning of this event it is one way of rejuvenating and cleansing. Since Songkran is known as Thai's New Year, they should renew and cleanse their body, heart and mind for them to receive the overflowing graces for the whole year. For Thais, bad luck is never an option!

When is the Best Time to Visit Phuket?

If you're mental about a trip to Phuket then you're probably wondering when the best time to visit the island is. It all comes down to what you're after. Depending on when you pick to visit Phuket, you could end up battling it out with the locals in a water fight, sitting alone on a secluded beach or caught in the middle of the annual torture fest.

By far the most lively time to visit Phuket is while Songkran, which is the Thai New Year. What was once a primary gesture of pouring a little water on one someone else has morphed into the world's most intense water fight. It goes on all over Thailand and the islanders in Phuket give it all they've got.

Songkran Samui

If you don't like getting wet, don't even bother going outside. Songkran takes place April 13 to 15, with April 15 being the big day for the water fight. It's crazy. People line the streets all round the island, armed with water guns, buckets and hose pipes. Some People ride nearby in the backs of pickup trucks normally with a barrel or two full of water. Patong is where the action is wildest and the madness goes on well into the night. Everybody plays: locals, foreigners, men, women, young, old. It has to be seen to be believed.

For something totally out there, you have to check out the Phuket Vegetarian Festival. It's like nothing else you will ever experience. Entranced men and women (maa song) are said to feel no pain as they walk nearby the streets with their cheeks pierced with needles, knives, spears and all kinds of lively objects. If you're squeamish, give this one a miss. The festival happens every year in October.

The festival is also a great time to go veggie and you'll find that most of the local restaurants assault meat from the menu. Get yourself a map and travel to the Chinese temples to see ceremonies and other curiosities. On the last day, head to Saphan Hin, where the festival climaxes with People lining the streets and throwing firecrackers into the road as the maa song walk the final procession through Phuket Town.

Chinese New Year is also a fun time to visit Phuket, especially if you're a fan of Chinese food. The festival isn't quite as lively and glitzy as in Bangkok, but it's still worth seeing if you happen to be in the area. It takes place in February.

New Year's Eve in Phuket is best enjoyed in Patong. Everybody heads down to the beach before midnight to watch the magnificent fireworks display. Road sellers always have a variety of fireworks on offer, although due to most People being drunk, these often end up shooting into crowds of bemused onlookers, so watch out.

Of course, if you just want a quiet holiday, the best time to visit Phuket is from May to October while low season when visitor numbers are way down but the island is still just as beautiful.

Cuban Santeria

Santeria was introduced in Cuba along with the huge migrations of African slaves, especially the ones of congo, carabalí, and yoruba origin, whose beliefs mixed with the mandatory Christian religions of the Spanish Crown. Today, this syncretism is part of the Cuban people's cultural inheritance and it's gift in separate literary and aesthetic ways of expression. It appears to be the Cuban effect of the integration and cultural continuity of ethnic and religious elements of Spanish and African participants. Worships to Orishas or other African deities, in general Yoruba, are still alive under worships to images of catholic saints. Along with Santeria, other elements were introduced such as the myths, legends, traditions, chants, dances, recipes, and rituals that make up the Cuban culture nowadays.

Apart from the familiar cult to the Orishas or "Regla de Ocha", Africans brought to Cuba a new way of religious organization: the incommunicable Abakúa community (developed near the harbor and the piers, particularly in Havana, Matanzas and Cárdenas, in the Northern coast of Western Cuba, integrated only by men), the only one of its type in America, representing a base phenomenon in Western Africa. Someone else one was "Las firmas de los santos en el Palo Monte" or "Regla Conga", a religious cult of Bantú origin practiced in the Island.

Songkran Samui

Among the Abakúas, there are a series of organizing characteristics and they consist of small groups called "juegos" o "potencias". Solidarity is requested among the players (ekobios) of each "juego", as well as the rivalry among separate "juegos" which have industrialized bloody events. To the Abakúa or "Ñáñigo", the sense of honor manifests itself as manliness. It's a community of mutual help, first industrialized among the ancient "cabildos de nación"(societies that kept alive African languages, traditions and beliefs), among the slaves, then black Creoles were involved, and later the mulattos, whites, and even Chinese.

Palo Monte covers numerous liturgies: "mayombe" (it gathers the ones who work with the Dead); the "kimbisa" or "embisa" (it gathers the ones that make the beverages devoted to medical sicknesses); the "kinfuiti" (whose job is to cry after the Dead) and the "briyumba" (which covers everything).

Santeria includes separate levels of initiation and priestly categories. Among the best known are the "babaloshas" and "iyaloshas", known in the island as "santeros" and "santeras" An leading place is occupied by the "awuses" or "babalawos" (a Yoruba word etymologically arrival from "baba" «father» and "awó" «secret»). In Cuba, there are other intermediate diverse categories which wish an uncalculated knowledge and an artistic talent for their cult, such as the "alú batá" or "tamboleros", responsible for interpreting the Orishas' ritual music. They use three drums for the ceremony: the "iyá" (the biggest), the "itótele", and the third one is the "okónkolo" (the smallest).

The "ilé-ocha" of santería is the so called "toque de santo", in whose ceremonies there could be separate functions: that of initiation, that of presentation of the drum, that of birthday, that of funeral or the day of the catholic saint, as well as the parties for "having fun" with the saints which are the "toques de güiro" (abwe or cekeré). No "santero" (a man practicing santeria) can be initiated if not baptized by the Catholic Church, although during his life as "santero" he'll sass to the "Regla de Ocha". Every September 8, in the ultramarine town of Regla, in Havana, ceremonies are held so that the sons of Yemeyá pay tribute to the Virgin of Regla. Other celebrations in Cuba are that of Saint Barbara, on December 4, and that of Babalú-ayé (Saint Lázaro), on December 17. Although private, the majority of the ceremonies can be visited by anyone, so if you are strolling around Havana, Matanzas, or Santiago de Cuba in the afternoon and you hear the drums playing, effect the sound and drop by the "solar" (tenement building) because, for sure, you'll find man "haciéndose santo" (becoming a satero).

Symonds Yat - information on The Scenic Forest of Dean community

Symonds Yat is a traveler village in the Forest of Dean. It lies close to the Welsh border. The village has marvelous landscape and views.

History

Songkran Samui

People believe the name 'Symonds Yat' originates from a 17th century sheriff called Robert Symonds, and the ancient word 'yat', meaning a gate or pass. The 'yat' may refer to the old-fashioned two hand (pull) cable ferries that cross the river. Ferrymen manually pull the ferry across via an overhead cable.

The River Wye and East and West Villages

The River Wye runs through the village, and forms a border between two counties.

Symonds Yat is split into an East and West side. The West side is in Herefordshire, and the East side is in Gloucestershire. The river cuts a gorge through ancient limestone rock, exposing impressive rock faces. Archaeological discoveries at a colse to 'King Arthur's Cave' have included Sabre-toothed cat bones and remains of a hyena family.

The Limestone Rock

The village is probably most famous for its large exposed limestone outcrop. This outcrop rises 120 metres, on the Gloucestershire side. between April and August many birds of prey such as Buzzards, Goshawks and Peregrine Falcons are often seen nesting in the cliff face. Telescopes provided by the Rspb and Forest company (owners of the site) help visitors spot the birds of prey. Rspb volunteers help the visitors in using the telescopes.

The cliff face is favorite with climbers, but is very risky to climb and has cost climbers their lives.

Attractions

The East side has two hotels and a canoe hire centre.

The West side has a caravan and camping site, and an amusement park. There is also a maze.

There are artificial rapids for use by canoeists and kayakers in whitewater training.

Boat trips down the river are a great attraction, as well as the country pubs and an oriental garden.
